Attacks on Students

For about one and a half month I was in Melbourne when every news channel in India was flashing news of attacks on Indian students there. I feel sorry for the students who were attacked and their respective families. When i was there I visited several places and observed the situation minutely, talked to several people there Indian students,Indians settled there and Australians and came to the conclusion that these are just like criminal cases in any part of the world. I would like to tell everyone concerned that there is no racial discrimination as such . And the hype created by the media is doing more harm than good.

Population of Indian students has increased manifold after the 9/11 attacks in the US . Students from all backgrounds go there as visa rules are not too strict . As universities are earning millions of dollars through these students ,they give admission to maximum number of students. There are some universities where a wife takes admission in some course,so that the husband gets a work visa. Those who cannot afford to pay the expenses have to work and accept whatever job they get like in 7-11 stores, driving late night taxies .They have to live in the outskirts so that they have to pay lesser amount as rents, several students live together in a single room and they do not mind accepting lesser than the minimum amount of wages. And unfortunately, the business men from Indian and Pakistani origin exploit students by giving them lesser than the minimum wages. All these things make them expose themselves to danger and make them an easy prey to miscreants

The only difference we have seen that earlier only Australian students could do IBL (Industry Based Learning) from Australia, foreigners could go abroad but now they have stopped IBL completely for foreign students and job opportunities are better only after you get a Permanent residency.

My suggestion to the parents is that when they send their children there, they should check whether they can support them financially in case they do not get a job . The crime rate there is minimum does not mean that they should not take precautions when they go out and it is better to go out in a group than alone. And go by the highway not by the byway
